Local golfers qualify for championship


Five golfers from the BruceGreySimcoe region qualified for the Ontario Better Ball Championship during an event Friday at National Pines Golf Club near Barrie (shown in photo above).

Ernie Vettese of Tangle Creek Golf Club near Barrie teamed up with Philip Arci of Caledon Woods to shoot 69 (-3) and tie for first at the qualifier.

Also shooting 69 was the team of Tony Iacovelli of the National Golf Club of Canada and Michael Hunt of Mississauga Golf and Country Club.

One stroke behind in a tie for third was the team of Chris Frook and Josiah Dixon of Cobble Beach Golf Links near Owen Sound.

They tied with Luke McLean of Coppinwood and Nicholas Striker of Oviinbyrd Golf Club and Mike Woodhouse and Allen Chapman of Lindsay Golf and Country Club.

The team of Tom Olesinski and Craig Watkins of Glencairn GC shot 71 and finished alone in 6th place.

Also qualifying by shooting 72 and tying for 7th were the teams of Bryan Francis and David Gamble of Eagle Ridge GC and Dave Mills and Stephen Barrett of Barrie Country Club.

Alternates for the championship are the teams of Michael Fiorini of the National Golf Club and Michael Zizek of York Downs G & CC and Daniel Margettie of Royal Ashburn and Trevor Parks, a public player who lives in Thornhill.

The Better Ball Championship will be held May 10 at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Downsview.
