Strong field expected for Collingwood Classic

Batteaux Creek Golf Club near Nottawa will be the site of the Collingwood Classic.

The Collingwood Classic returns to Batteaux Creek Golf Club next month with a new twist. The Great Lakes Tour event will offer participants a shot at earning an exemption for the Mackenzie Investments Open, a PGA Tour Canada event scheduled for Sept. 6-9 at Elm Ridge Country Club near Montreal.

Players will be able to qualify in one of three ways.

The first will be an Ontario qualifier at the course on Wednesday, July 11 - one day before the Collingwood Classic kicks off.

If at least 30 players participate in the qualifier, there will be three exemptions available. The qualifier is open to both pros and amateurs.

Another way to qualify is to finish first or runner-up in the Collingwood Classic.

A third possibility is to finish high enough in the Race to the Mackenzie Investments Open - a four-event cumulative points competition that culminates at Batteaux Creek.

With all these opportunities, Great Lakes Tour owner Jim Kenesky is expecting a strong field for the Classic.

“I think it will be one of the biggest events in the past 10 years,” he said. “I expect the field to be deep and strong.”

Adding to the event’s appeal from a player’s perspective is the golf course, Kenesky notes.

He brought the tour to Batteaux Creek two years ago and “we were just blown away by it.
“We were asking ourselves ‘why haven’t we heard of this golf course before?’ ”

Batteaux Creek, a GolfNorth Properties course, is located southeast of Collingwood near the small community of Nottawa.

The event is open to the public.
