Rachael Rier heading to Davenport University

Hanover golfer lands scholarship

Rachael Rier can thank her friend for introducing her to competitive golf.

“In Grade 9 my friend actually signed me up for the golf team as a joke and I’ve loved it since,” said the Hanover resident. “The BAA (Bluewater Athletic Association) tournament in Grade 9 was actually the first round of 18 I ever played!”

While she played as a youngster with her dad, she didn’t  get serious about the game until that first BAA tourney.

During the past three years she has competed on the Maple Leaf Junior Tour and at Canadian Junior Golf Association and Golf Ontario events. She also represented Canada with the CJGA in California last year and on the Grey Bruce Junior Tour she won the Girls’ Division title.

Her success has led to a scholarship at Davenport University - an NCAA Division II school in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Last year she took lessons from Pike Lake head pro Greg Shaw and this year is working with Ainsdale owner and pro Taylor Schmidt, who had a successful collegiate career with the University of Oklahoma women’s golf team.

Rier will head to Grand Rapids the last week of August.  “I’m extremely excited for this opportunity and I’m looking forward to this next step on my journey,” she said. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about Davenport and their golf coaches, and I can't wait to be a part of their team in the fall.”
