Saugeen Golf Club to play host in 2018

Sr. Ryder Cup Championship coming to area

Another major golf championship is coming to the BruceGreySimcoe region.

It has been announced that the 2018 Senior Ryder Cup championship will be held at Saugeen Golf Club, a 27-hole facility near Port Elgin, Ontario.

The championship will feature at least 16 clubs and 128 amateur players representing an area that includes all of southern Ontario, parts of Eastern and Northern Ontario and parts of Michigan and New York states.

The championship will bring some of the best senior age male golfers in Ontario together to compete in a team format.

The Senior Ryder Cup currently has 100 member clubs and has decided to add 28 more clubs for 2018.

In making the announcement, Senior Ryder Cup President Wally Berseth stated that the facilities and conditions of Saugeen Golf Club were the primary factors in choosing this location and for the first time moving the Championships away from the QEW and 401 corridors.

He also indicated that he was confident that the members and staff of the Saugeen Golf Club would “host a most successful Championship and no doubt would raise the bar for the 2019 Championship which was awarded to The Devil’s Pulpit Golf Association.”

For the Saugeen event, there will be a practice round on Sept. 13 then the championship won Sept. 14, 2018.

This is the second championship announced for the BGS area this month. On June 15 the PGA Tour Canada’s Mackenzie Tour announced that it is bringing the Ontario championship to National Pines Golf Club near Barrie Sept. 4-10, 2017.
